In a landmark moment for the Raymondville ISD music program, Ben Keltner—now in his fifth year as Band Director—was inducted into the prestigious Honorary Bandmaster Fraternity, Phi Beta Mu. The ceremony was a gathering of educators, community leaders, and band enthusiasts who came together to honor those whose passion for music education has touched countless lives.
Keltner, a native of Harlingen and a proud veteran who served in Iraq, has quickly become a beacon of excellence in the Rio Grande Valley. His transformative leadership has taken the district’s band program to new heights—earning multiple trips to the UIL State Marching Championships, Area Finals, and a remarkable streak of 13 consecutive UIL Sweepstakes awards. Beyond these achievements, his students’ successes in TMEA and ATSSB competitions speak volumes about his dedication and heart for teaching.
With roots dating back to 1937, Phi Beta Mu is an international honorary fraternity that recognizes and honors band directors whose dedication and devotion to their profession is paramount.
Reflecting on the milestone, Keltner said:
"In order to be inducted into Phi Beta Mu, you must be co-sponsored by 3 current members... the 3 gentlemen that sponsored me, Rolando Molina, Charlie Cabrera and Bill Cason, have a combined experience of over 140 years! It is an honor and very humbling to be in the same room with these 'Giants of Music Education!' I thank God for sustaining me on this long path and for the support of my close family and Raymondville ISD!"
Keltner’s words resonate deeply with the community, capturing both his gratitude and his humble approach to a career that has been as much about personal growth as it is about inspiring young musicians. His commitment extends well beyond the classroom—serving as the ATSSB Band Region Coordinator for Valley 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A Schools, and remaining an active, supportive member of organizations like TMEA, TBA, and the Texas Music Adjudicators Association.
For many, Mr. Keltner is not just a Band Director; he is a mentor, a visionary, and a true family man who cherishes the support of his wife Jackie and their four children. His induction into Phi Beta Mu is more than an honor—it is a testament to a lifetime of passion, hard work, and unwavering commitment to the transformative power of music.
