Held during the third full week of October each year, National School Bus Safety Week is an evolving public education initiative that brings together parents, students, teachers, motorists, bus operators, and school administrators to highlight the importance of school bus safety. It is observed by school districts nationwide as part of their ongoing efforts to keep students safe.

School buses remain the safest form of transportation for children. According to the National Safety Council, students are 70 times more likely to get to school safely by bus than by car. Buses are designed to protect students through compartmentalization—closely spaced seats and high, energy-absorbing seat backs. In addition, seat belts provide aadded layer of safety for students.

Raymondville ISD is committed to ensuring student safety by continuously enhancing its transportation services. Recently, the district invested in five new buses, including those equipped to accommodate students with disabilities. These buses feature enhanced safety measures, including improved visibility for drivers and advanced braking systems. In addition, the district hacompletely refurbished six buses, making them look and perform like new to ensure continued safe operation.

“We’re proud to invest in our fleet and maintain the highest safety standards for our students,” said Chief Oscar Gutierrez, Maintenance and Transportation Director. “Our new buses and safety improvements reflect our commitment to protecting the well-being of our students and staff.”

Raymondville ISD haalso launched a CDL training program to address bus driver shortages by offering staff members onsite training to earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This initiative aims to add 3-5 new certified drivers by the end of the month, further strengthening the district’s transportation team.

“National School Bus Safety Week is an important reminder of the role our bus drivers play in keeping students safe, and it’s agreat opportunity to raise awareness about safe practices on and around buses,” added Deputy Superintendent Dr. BenjaminClinton.

Throughout the week, Raymondville ISD will be engaging students and the community in activities to promote safe riding habits, while also encouraging motorists to be mindful of school buses on the road.
