Raymondville Early College High School (RECHS) Sports Medicine Students Excel in Emergency Response

On Tuesday, October 9, 2024, an athlete from a visiting school district collapsed, possibly suffering from a heat-related illness during the District Cross Country Meet. In a remarkable display of preparedness and teamwork, students from Raymondville Early College High School’s Sports Medicine program quickly stepped in to assist, showcasing the skills they’ve developed as part of the RECHS Health Careers Academy and work-based learning program.

These students were trained for moments like this. Sports Medicine Specialist James Villegas noted that the students acted immediately, providing crucial aid to the athlete alongside athletic trainers from other districts. They quickly supplied ice-cold towels, water, ice bags, and an AED to ensure the medical professionals on-site had everything they needed to treat the athlete.

One of the students, a junior, shared their experience: “We were prepared for situations like this, and seeing how our help made a difference felt incredible. It’s one thing to go through various scenarios as practice during the summer, but applying it in real life is something I won’t forget. The training gave us the confidence to handle the situation, but the actual experience added a whole new level of understanding. Knowing that our efforts truly impacted the outcome is something that will stay with me for a long time. I’m proud of our team and the impact we had on the athlete.”

After the athlete was transported by EMS, the student trainers quickly regrouped and continued their duties, ready to assist wherever needed throughout the remainder of the event.

Raymondville ISD Health Coordinator JoAnn Posas expressed her pride in their performance: "I am incredibly proud of our students for their quick and effective response. Seeing the knowledge and skills we've taught them come to life in such a critical moment is truly heartwarming. The simulations and critical thinking exercises we conduct have clearly prepared them for real-world emergencies, and their professionalism and teamwork are a testament to their dedication. These students deserve full recognition for their remarkable efforts."

The students’ actions during this incident not only demonstrated the quality of training provided by RECHS but also embodied the values of care, responsibility, and leadership that Raymondville ISD strives to instill in all its students. Their selflessness and readiness stand as a point of pride for the school and the broader community.
