It’s Bandtober at Raymondville Early College High School!

As the Bearkat Band gears up for the UIL Pigskin Competition on Saturday, October 19, they're marching forward with an undefeated record against 3A schools this season. Competing in events across the state—from the Rio Grande Valley to WacoRobstown, and Calallen—they have finished as the top 3A school at each contest, even outscoring several 4A and 5A schools along the way. Most notably, at the Calallen Bay Area Marching Competition, they were crowned Grand Champions for the second year in a row.

Building on last year’s success, where they advanced to the state competition in class 4A, this season’s reclassification to 3A has brought even higher expectations. Band Director Ben Keltner spoke about the band’s journey so far: “Our students have put in countless hours of hard work and have shown up ready to perform at every competition. Seeing them continue to grow and excel, especially after last year's run to state, is incredible. This group is hungry for success, and I know they’re ready for what lies ahead.”

The Bearkat Band's recent achievements include top placements at two major competitions on October 12. At the Calallen Bay Area Marching Competition, they earned 1st Place Drum Major1st Place Percussion1st Place Color Guard, and 1st Place Class 3A, bringing home the Grand Champion trophy for a second consecutive year. Later that day, they dominated the Crossroads Marching Competition in Robstown, winning 1st Place Drumline1st Place Drum Major, and 1st Place Class 3A.

“This undefeated season is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and staff. They’ve shown up at every competition, prepared to perform at the highest level, and I’m confident they’ll continue to make our district proud,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Clinton. “The UIL Pigskin Competition is just the first step in their march to state, and I believe they have everything it takes to go all the way.”

Earlier in the season, the Bearkat Band earned top honors at the Odem Owl Marching Invitational, claiming Runner-Up Grand Champions and 1st Place in Music. The band also earned recognition for Outstanding 3A Percussion and Color Guard, solidifying their place as a regional powerhouse.

The Bearkat Band kicked off their 2024 season by hosting the Gateway Marching Invitational at Raymondville ISD. Judges praised their performance of this year’s show, Flight, for its precision, musicality, and visual elements. The event provided invaluable feedback that the band has used to sharpen their performance as they continue their journey toward the state competition.

As the UIL Pigskin Competition approaches, the Bearkat Band is focused and ready, carrying the pride of Willacy County with them as they take the next step on their path to excellence.
