Raymondville, TX – October 12, 2024 – The Raymondville ECHS FFA cooking team celebrated a triumphant win at the Lyford CISD 1st Annual Fajita Fest Cook-Off and Community Tailgate, held on Friday before the highly anticipated Cotton Bowl football game between the Raymondville Bearkats and the Lyford Bulldogs.
The event brought together students and families from across the County for an afternoon filled with culinary competition and community spirit. The Raymondville ECHS FFA showcased their skills, grilling up delicious fajitas to secure first place.
Pittman Elementary Pitmasters claimed second place, while the LC Smith Sizzle Squad won a special award for Best Decorated Camp, finishing seventh overall in the cookoff. Both Pittman and LC Smith students have been honing their grilling and cooking skills through their after-school programs, contributing to their impressive performances at the event. The celebration included festive balloon arches at both elementary schools, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
As students grilled, they also engaged in various games, creating an inviting and enjoyable environment for everyone present. RISD Central Administration placed eighth, and Lyford High School FFA rounded out the top spots with a third-place finish, showcasing talent from every educational level.
Banners displayed around the Raymondville campus celebrated the academic achievements of the schools, emphasizing their A-ratings and recognition from U.S. News & World Report as some of the best high schools and elementary schools in the nation.
“Watching our students engage in cooking and grilling while enjoying friendly competition is truly inspiring; it reflects the spirit of learning beyond the classroom,” said Pittman Elementary Principal Sulema Davila.
The Fajita Fest Cook-Off was a memorable highlight for the community, uniting Willacy County in support of their local schools while celebrating both academic and culinary accomplishments.
