“Dad! Did you know if there’s a fire, you have to stop, drop, and roll?” a Pittman Elementary PreK student eagerly exclaimed as they climbed into the car during afterschool pickup. They had just learned the lifesaving tip during Raymondville ISD's kickoff to Fire Prevention Week.
The week began with a special visit from Chief Oscar Gutierrez, Assistant Fire Chief Randy Salinas, the Raymondville Volunteer Fire Department, and the RISD Police Department, who visited both Pittman and L.C. Smith Elementary to teach students about fire safety on Monday, October 7, 2024. From how to safely evacuate a building to the importance of having a family fire plan, students were immersed in lessons that could one day save lives.
One of the highlights of the day was when students saw a real fire truck up close. They watched a live demonstration and learned about the equipment firefighters use to battle flames. The excitement hit a new high when students got to participate in a fire hose demonstration, spraying water and feeling what it’s like to be part of the team.
That afternoon, parents were greeted with enthusiastic stories about firetrucks, “Stop, Drop, and Roll,” staying low to avoid smoke, and feeling doors to check for heat during an evacuation.
Each student also brought home a fire safety activity book filled with checklists, encouraging families to create and review their own fire safety plans. These materials ensured that the lessons learned at school continued at home, helping to make the entire community more prepared.
With the help of the Raymondville Volunteer Fire Department and the RISD Police Department, Raymondville ISD’s Fire Prevention Week is off to a fantastic start, engaging students and families in fire safety education that will have a lasting impact.
