RISD Enhances Transportation Services with New Buses, Fleet Vehicles, CDL Training Program

Raymondville Independent School District (RISD) is proud to announce significant improvements to its transportation services, focusing on safety, accessibility, and efficiency for students. In recent years, the district has invested in the purchase of five new buses, including vehicles equipped for passengers with disabilities, and new fleet vehicles with enhanced safety features. Additionally, RISD has fully refurbished six buses, making them look and perform like new. This combination of new and refurbished vehicles ensures a top-quality fleet to serve the district’s students.

The new buses are equipped with state-of-the-art safety features such as advanced braking systems, seatbelt harnesses, and improved fuel efficiency. Buses designed for students with disabilities are outfitted with lifts and secure seating areas, ensuring that all students have access to safe, reliable transportation. The refurbishment of six buses brought them up to the same standard as the new vehicles, extending their service life and giving them a fresh, like-new appearance.

New CDL Training Program
In addition to enhancing the district’s fleet, RISD, under the leadership of Chief Oscar Gutierrez, Maintenance and Transportation Director, has launched a new onsite CDL training program to expand the number of qualified bus drivers. This initiative offers staff members the necessary training and resources to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), addressing the growing need for certified drivers and ensuring RISD maintains reliable transportation for students.

Recently, Maintenance Staff Member TJ Huerta completed his CDL training and passed his exam, qualifying him to assist with driving buses. As a result, TJ will receive an approximate $1,100 annual raise, with additional opportunities to earn overtime by driving for student events. RISD plans to certify 3-5 additional drivers this month through this program.

Dr. Benjamin A. Clinton, Deputy Superintendent, expressed pride in the district's efforts to enhance transportation: "Our priority is ensuring students have safe, reliable transportation to and from school and extracurricular events. The addition of new buses, fully refurbished vehicles, and the CDL training program is part of our commitment to providing the highest quality service for our students and families. Programs like this help us continue delivering excellence in every area."

With these ongoing improvements, Raymondville ISD is strengthening its transportation services, ensuring students have access to safe and reliable transportation for both daily commutes and extracurricular activities.
