Bearkats win their home opener 21-0

Behind a dominant defense and a steady offense, the Raymondville Bearkats (1-1) defeated the Grulla Gators 21- 0 Friday night at Burnett Stadium.

Raymondville’s defense turned in a lights out performance in allowing just two yards of total offense and surrendered only two first downs in the victory.

“I’m very proud of our team, we played well as unit and it was a great team win,” said head coach Frank Cantu, “I’m glad to see all of our hard work pay off.”

On offense, Raymondville scored on their second drive of the contest when Jaden Mendez caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Senior quarterback Luis De la Paz. Kicker Adiel Resendez added the extra point.

Fullback Freddy Quintero extended the Bearkat lead early in the fourth quarter with a touchdown run from 3 yards out.

Junior quarterback Diego Villegas capped off the scoring with a thrilling 20-yard touchdown run to secure the win.

Next up, Raymondville will face La Feria in their final tune up game before the start of district play.

“We haven’t played La Feria in three seasons. They are always a tough opponent, but we look forward to the challenge,” added Cantu, “They are well coached and have good athletes, so it’s a great test before we start district play.”

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. this Friday night in La Feria.
