Pittman Elementary and LC Smith Elementary Named Among the Best Elementary Schools

Washington, D.C.– April 8, 2024 – Raymondville Independent School District (RISD) proudly announces that its two elementary schools, Pittman Elementary and LC Smith Elementary, have earned recognition as Best Elementary Schools by US News and World Report. This accolade underscores their dedication to academic excellence and student achievement.

US News and World Report annually evaluates schools across the nation, utilizing a comprehensive ranking methodology that assesses proficiency in mathematics and reading. These rankings reflect not only academic prowess but also a commitment to providing quality education for all students, irrespective of their backgrounds. The rankings encompass over 79,000 public elementary and middle schools nationwide, and schools are ranked at the state and district level.

"We are incredibly proud to see Pittman Elementary and LC Smith Elementary earn this prestigious recognition," remarked RISD Superintendent Stetson Roane. "This achievement speaks volumes about the dedication and hard work of our educators, staff, students, and families.”

The methodology focuses on state assessments of students who were proficient or above proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts while accounting for student backgrounds, achievement in core subjects, and how well schools are educating their students. Student-teacher ratios are applied to break ties in the overall score.

The 2024 Best Elementary Schools rankings are based on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education. “The 2024 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings offer a way for parents to get a snapshot of their child’s school and how well it is doing compared with other schools in their community," said LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News. “In addition, U.S. News provides easily accessible data on student-teacher ratios, district spending, and the number of counselors a school makes available to its students.”
